Reliability comes down to the sum of the rifle’s parts and things like a Reinforced AR 15 Buffer Retainer can help add durability, and confidence that your rifle continues to function properly. The buffer retainer pin should be a “set and forget” piece, but that is not always the case.
This seemingly minor detail can affect your rifle if it breaks. Oftentimes, when the buffer retainer breaks, the tip of the pin becomes stuck inside your fire control group, located in the lower receiver, causing a jam and stopping the rifle from firing.
The reinforced buffer is only 10% larger than the standard specifications (0.102 vs.0.093) and is just enough to improve the durability without affecting its compatibility within your buffer system. The tip of the retainer is rounded to avoid timing requirements.
It is machined from 17-4 stainless steel and is heat treated to H900 for hardness. Making it less likely to fracture over time, ensuring your buffer tube stays in place when working on your rifle, and keeping your rifle functioning during use. The reinforced buffer retainer is compatible with Mil-Spec lower parts kits (assuming correct dimensions) and with Vltor A5s.
